Blissful Ignorance

A tiny hole will make us sink
To the bottom of the drink,
And such a hole I have espied,
(I could not miss it had I tried)
Letting water spurt in there,
Supplanting all the buoyant air.

But up above both fore and aft
The passengers all think me daft,
They say it's best that we not know
All that goes on down below,
That the only way to live
Is focused on the positive.

Determined to enjoy the trip,
They stress the virtues of the ship,
Impressed with both its strength and size,
They prefer to close their eyes
To alarums on the sea
From such a small minority.

David Martin

May be sung to the Navy Hymn tune.
